About 20 years ago – we’re not really sure what year in the 1990’s we started our corn maze(!) – we read about some farms and places around the country that were creating fun mazes in their cornfields. We thought – sounds like fun – so why not? We visited a few in Ohio and neighboring states, got lost a lot and then created the first Cowvin’s Corny Maze.
The first year, we waited until the corn was fully grown, then carefully used graph paper to make a maze, using the rows of corn for the one dimension and a farmer-type good guess on how to measure the field the other way. We went to the field, using corn knives (a farm tool left over from many, many years ago) and hand-cut the 10’ high corn stalks from the field. Of course, we had to drag the stalks out of the field to make room for the paths. In late July/early August, this was hot, sweaty work. But we got it done, and the first few Guests through the maze were all smiling when they found their way out. We even remember talking to a farmer and his family saying how much fun it was – and the farmer had a puzzled look on his face because he grew corn and couldn’t quote figure out what was fun about walking through a corn field! Maybe it was the homemade ice cream cone he got later?
This year we have a larger than average Cowvin’s Corny Maze. The maze is open from 11am-6pm, weather permitting, for weekends starting mid-Sep then daily through the end of October.
Tickets can be purchased at Cowvin’s Corny Bin located between the Dairy Store and Barn, or in the Dairy Store Cheese Shop. You get on the Cowvin’s Corny Maze wagon ride for a trip out to the corn maze – then get lost for a while – usually 25-50 minutes – depending on your skills and luck – then hop on the wagon for a trip back to the barn area. Age 11 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
