Many have visited during the busy time of year – and have tried to count just how many people we have working behind the counter dipping ice cream. At our peak, we have about 320 people working at Young’s to make everything happen here on the farm. During the winter, the employee count drops to about 220 or so. Many of our Staff are either college or high school students, so our needs (more or less) match the availability of our employees.
Around 75% of our Staff work in either of our restaurants, 15% at Udders & Putters miniature golf, driving range, batting cages and other outdoor fun things to do like Cowvin’s Corny Maze & Pick Your Own Pumpkins, and the other 10% does ice cream & cheese production, bookkeeping & accounting and of course, milking the cows.
Since the late 1940’s, when we were known as Hap Young & Sons, we have employed over 5,000 people (an estimate – our records really don’t go that far back!). Currently, 10 of the Young family work at Young’s as part of the 320 total. We feel fortunate to have worked beside and with so many talented people over the years. They have made Young’s what it is today.
We have developed an affinity to working with people entering the workforce on their first job. We get the opportunity to help them and help Young’s by developing good habits like being on time, taking responsibility and juggling the demands of a job with all the other stuff going on in a life busy with family, friends, school activities and more!
Our turnover rate – the rate we need to hire new Staff to replace the ones leaving – is very low compared to the industry averages. Normally, we hire about 40% of our Staff new each year – that’s about 100-130 people. The industry average for turnover is over 100% each year.
We attribute our better than average performance to many factors. There is a great work ethic in our surrounding community (our Staff represents 22 local high schools and 15 colleges and universities!). We are as flexible in scheduling our Staff as we can be. And we have a good training system in place. Of course, we train new Staff on how to dip an ice cream cone, make a milkshake, how to cook breaded cheese curds and other details of the job, but we spend just as much time training on the mission of Young’s Jersey Dairy (We Create Fun for Our Customers) and how to deliver great Guest service. Young’s is a busy place and it’s helpful to understand the demands of taking care of our Guests.
